Insights on linking the travel industry to the environment …

In 1983 I graduated Michigan State University with a pioneer of a new major — environmental studies. Now I have not used this for decades, but today I am seeing business embracing the environment – not just as the right thing to do, but as good business.

On Tuesday there was a special Climate and Environment Action Forum hosted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) where Hilton Worldwide CEO Christopher Nassetta stated that, while industry works to reduce carbon footprint and waste, “You can make more money doing it. You can do good and do well.”

The travel and tourism industry is larger than many realize: 10.4% of global GDP, accounting for one of every 10 jobs on the planet, and also responsible for 5% of global emissions. Kudos to WTTC for taking the lead and setting a goal and action plan for its members to be “climate neutral” by 2050.

Another important statement was from Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO (pictured above) who said, “We have to take action, do more and work together, together we can make a difference for our children!”

As I think about this, as CEOs, we have so much leverage …. Let’s see what we can do to make the world a better place; and as you know, it’s not just doing the right thing, it’s smart business.
